    • In the wake of the 1893 War, a number of Molokans are expelled from Russia by the tsar and forcibly resettled in Kars. Among the exiles is Mishka’s family. Mishka, now in his 70s, used to work the village mill, but with the arrival of modern machinery the mill fell into obsolescence and Mishka into penury. Popuç, the ageing and cantankerous matriarch of the village, can’t stand the sight of Mishka and doesn’t want him living in the village. This leaves the villagers caught between Popuç and Mishka, who they know and like as a giving, peaceable and harmless old man. Popuç lives with her son Şemistan, her daughter-in-law Figan and three grandchildren. Alma, the youngest of her grandchildren, is a kind and headstrong girl, born with a musical ear. Her schoolteacher, Metin, has noticed Alma’s talent and thinks it shouldn’t be left to go to waste. Alma, meanwhile, strikes up a close friendship with Mishka.
