    • Synopsis
    • Garlow - a frontier town on the Californian trail during the 1849 Gold Rush. Modest Irishman PATRICK TATE is trying to build a life with his wife INGRID and their two children. A skilled carpenter and the town's undertaker, Patrick wants to be an honest self-made man with a family that wants for nothing.

Despite being branded an outsider and not fully accepted by the community, overseen by domineering PREACHER PIKE, Patrick believes the quiet town is a good place for his growing family. He is dedicated to his work, but makes little money and he and Ingrid survive by farming their small parcel of land. The wagons passing west on their way to the Gold Rush settlements over the Rockies tempt Patrick to take his family and join them but Ingrid, who is pregnant, protests.

One night notorious outlaw DUTCH ALBERT and his gang arrive on a man hunt. Seeing an opportunity, Dutch reopens the town’s saloon. Neither Preacher Pike or the elderly SHERIFF are able to stop Dutch quickly taking over the small town. Dutch's whores, gambling, whiskey and guns soon bring conflict and killings, and Patrick’s undertaking business prospers.

As Patrick's business booms, Dutch starts to treat him as an ally. Many in the community are disgusted by Patrick’s apparent complicity, and Ingrid utterly rejects the family’s newfound prosperity as the proceeds of evil. She threatens to take their children and leave.

Patrick justifies his actions to Ingrid and himself. He’s just doing his job to provide for the family. As long as the violence remains amongst the saloon patrons why shouldn't his family prosper. But Patrick is living in a dangerous time, in a dangerous place, where loyalties can spin like the barrel of a gun.
