    • Synopsis
    • The internet and social media have forever changed the way we communicate, interact, love, work, and play. NARSOCIETY – THE CANCEL CULTURE MUSICAL tells the story of what happens when it all comes crashing together - when the private becomes public, when selfies define self-esteem, and when outrage overrides conversation.

NARSOCIETY is a full length musical featuring 19 songs that explore various elements of the Internet experience: procrastination, dating apps, cat-fishing, incessant selfies, cat videos, fears of improbable disasters, response time insecurity, the thrill of trending, and much, much more.

NARSOCIETY is a Romantic Comedy about a struggling cartoonist who wants to prove he's worthy of love and people’s respect. Carlos thinks he can only obtain love and respect if he has career success. He knows that using the internet and social media is how you accomplish that.

After being tricked into using a dating app by his misogynistic cat-fishing co-worker Travis, Carlos meets Sadie, a social media-introvert who wears her broken heart on her twitter feed. They quickly become smitten for each other, drawn together by their love for jokes and pictures. But some misinterpreted text messages lead to an impulsive break up.

Carlos is crushed and tries to win Sadie back with a funny cartoon he draws for her. The gesture confuses Sadie, so she posts the drawing on her social media account, asking for advice. Sadie’s friend Blair blasts the drawing out on her blog, accusing Carlos of being a sexual predator. It goes viral. Can Carlos overcome being the monster of the internet and reconnect with his love?

Would your relationship survive viral public shaming?

The musical was partly inspired by the experience Justine Sacco had in 2013 when she tweeted a regrettable joke to her 150 followers before boarding a flight from NY to Johannesburg. By the time she landed, the tweet had been shared over a billion times and she found herself the most viciously hated person on Earth.

Internet outrage is a tumultuous subject matter with many perspectives. We hope the music and comedy disarm people enough to see through some of the ridiculousness that we accept as normal these days. The goal of the play is to find some common ground in this combative new world and perhaps spark some needed introspection and discussion.
