    • Over 400 women fought disguised as men on both sides during the American Civil War. This is Grace Kieler's story. A Civil War 'Twelfth Night' but without laughter. Grace disguises herself as her brother in order to find him in the ranks. Unbeknownst to her Henry has become a spy and embedded with the Union army helping them try to capture the traitor in their ranks. Henry throws them off the trail at every turn until he and his sister meet on the field. Grace is captured as the spy and stands to be executed. Grace has befriended a widow, Virginia Klaising, who has lost her farm, husband and child to the invading army. They form a special bond and feelings of love begin to grow as they nurture each other in the wilds of Appalachia. Virginia discovers the true gender of her friend when 'he' is shot. Stunned, she follows the real Henry to their homestead where he prepares to bury his sister. Virginia realizes the 'boy' is still alive and jumps into action to save her friend's life. When Grace is nursed back to health Virginia realizes her true feelings and they mirror that of Grace's. The Federal Army finally catches up to the real Henry and executes him in the woods. When Grace finds that her brother has died she vows to keep his memory alive and continues to live her life as a man. But Virginia must make her way to her sister's cabin and Grace is compelled to enter the ranks once again promising to reunite once the war is over.
