Graz, Austria 1963. The well-respected local politician and large-scale farmer Franz Murer is on trial for war crimes. The evidence is overwhelming: As the so-called “Butcher of Vilnius”, the former Austrian SS officer set up, organized and ruled the Vilna Ghetto from 1941 to 1943 and gained sad notoriety for being a sadist who showed special cruelty towards the Jewish population.
