With the Venezuelan oil industry devastated by sanctions and falling prices, a mining boom has intensified in its Guyana region, where large gold reserves lie beneath moriche palm groves.
Inspired by the travels of 19th Century geographers, Morichales is an adventure across the lands of the grand Orinoco River through a hypothetical geographer and explorer who narrates the extraction and commercialization of gold with a humanist vision integrating science, economics and poetry.
Like a fragile residue of an extraction, the film’s images shot in 16mm are traces of the primordial light of Nature, gold that slips from our grasp before our very eyes.
