    • Synopsis
    • Autumn in Moominvalley. Leaves are silently falling. The Groke shows up behind a tree and frost develops around her; the grass freezes. In Moominmamma’s garden the late roses still bloom. When the Groke comes and stands by the roses, they die one by one. She then leaves like a ghost.

Moomintroll watches leaves falling sitting on the staircase. He ponders. Suddenly it starts snowing, the snow soon covers the whole garden; it is silent and white. Moomintroll goes to bed but he cannot sleep. He has to explore the outer world. He climbs up to the attic to look from the window how it looks outside now, when the summer is gone; he climbs out through the window and slides down over the roof.

There are grey clouds, silence and whiteness, and Moomintroll feels puzzled, he is amazed of the wintry landscape but yearns for the summer. He decides to go to the sea shore; the sea must be lapping kindly as it does in the summer, he thinks. Soon he meets Too-Ticky who invites him to her place, which is the Moominfamily’s bathing-house. Moomintroll gets rather surprised by this fact, but Too-Ticky explains that even if the bathing-house is Moominfamily’s during the summer, she lives there in winter-time.

However beautiful winter is it doesn’t help the fact that Moomintroll is longing for the sun. He nourishes his yearning for summer. Too-Ticky tells him that a bonfire for the return of the sun could help. Strange dwellers from near and far join in. A torchlight procession comes through the darkness. It looks secretive and unfamiliar. Soon Too-Ticky ignites the fire. Would it really bring the sun back?

Winter mornings can be pale. But they tend to have a very special light. This specific morning is no exception. It is shimmering pink and brilliant. All of a sudden there are different creatures appearing. Gaffsie comes pulling a sledge full of packages. Then Hemulen recalls that the Moominfamily has resumed their winter slumber. This must be remedied right away! Hemulen tries to explain to the Moominfamily the special nature of the day - Christmas is coming! But Moominfamily doesn’t get it; who is Christmas? The family gets up anyway, one never knows, perhaps Christmas is nice?

And didn’t Hemulen mention a tree that Christmas needs? A tree to be all dressed up? A little Toffle tells them how to dress the tree, so Moominmamma immediately picks some of the most beautiful things they have in the house. Soon the Christmas tree is decorated and stands there in its full glory and beauty. But the Moominfamily is busy arranging the rest - one can’t know what Christmas expects.

The stars awake, night falls early. As Christmas isn’t coming Moomintroll offers the presents they’ve prepared for Christmas to all the small creatures that have come and joined them. There is no limit to the joyfulness and jubilation around the Christmas tree. Could a Christmas Eve be more fulfilling than this?
