Germany, 1945. Five-year-old Sophie and her parents flee the encroaching Russian front and find refuge in a hotel occupied by Nazis. After her parents go missing Sophie discovers a boy by the name of Beckmann hiding from the Russians. As she grows older they form a friendship, but she ends up marrying one of the Russian occupiers. Later, when the Red Army departs, Sophie and Beckmann finally leave the hotel together, now free from their occupiers. An animation film evoking Germany's past, and a labour of love for director Heinrich Sabl, who has been in production on the film for ten years.
