Directed by Irish helmer Aisling Walsh (SONG FOR A RAGGY BOY) and starring Oscar nominated Sally Hawkins (BLUE JASMINE, HAPPY GO LUCKY), MAUDIE is based on the true story of folk painter Maud Lewis. In this unlikely romance, curmudgeonly recluse Everett Lewis hires a fragile yet determined woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) to be his housekeeper. Maudie, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family—and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. To Everett's surprise, Maudie turns out to be terrible with housework; instead of cleaning, she slowly starts to cover the walls of Everett's tiny house with colourful paintings. Despite, and yet perhaps because of all this, Everett finds himself falling in love. MAUDIE is set in the glorious small-town Nova Scotia landscape of the 1950s and early ’60s. The film delicately charts Everett's efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie's deep and abiding love for this difficult man and her extraordinary rise to unexpected fame as a folk artist.
