    • Synopsis
    • Alar, the son of a legendary 12th century Oeselian warlord Ata, hears a prophecy that he will become a greater king than his father. Ata cautions him of the sacrifices great ambitions demand.

      Heading a trading mission overseas to Sigtuna, Alar falls in love with Gyla, the daughter of a local nobleman, believing she will lead him to greatness. Their love affair is doomed. When Alar tries to kidnap her as a last resort, the Oeselians’ fleet is destroyed in revenge. Alar is heavily wounded and imprisoned.

      Alar escapes and finds refuge in a remote church. Finding solace to his guilt, he decides to dedicate his life to church. But before that he needs to return home to renounce his claim to the throne and ask for his father’s forgiveness.

      Arriving home, he finds his father dead and his family disgraced because of what happened in Sigtuna. The power has been seized by a rivalling warlord. Alar realizes no one knows he is to blame for the calamity in Sigtuna and the prophecy starts ringing in his ears again. He decides to reclaim his throne.

      Elected king, Alar rallies the people up to avenge Sigtuna. The siege is successful, Sigtuna is in flames, the Oeselians are chanting the name of the young king Alar. But discovering Gyla’s dead body in the ruins, Alar realizes the truth in his father’s warning that greatness demands a high price.
