- Synopsis
- Louis Gossett, Jr., John Savage and Michael Moriarty star in an action-packed military thriller which plunges into the dark heart of corruption, drug smuggling and steamy passions that rule a devastated paradise. Paul Gleason, an undercover government operative is sent to Managua to recover the body of a friend and fellow agent, Dennis Rice, who has apparently been killed in a motorcycle accident. Upon reaching Nicaragua, where the government is locked in a deadly struggle against former Contras now involved in cocaine trafficking, Paul meets Marta, Dennis' fiancee, and Vince, a photojournalist friend of Dennis. Immediately, Paul is targeted for murder by the local State Security. Marta saves him by killing the assassin, but Paul is arrested and jailed where he is confronted by Barcel, the Head of State Security. Barcel says he knows Paul's real mission -- to find and kill Dennis, who is believed to have joined the cocaine cartel he was ordered to infiltrate. Barcel tells Paul that he did not plan the attempt on his life -- Security has been penetrated by the Cartel. He offers to free Paul if he will help him obtain the name of the corrupted officers. After Paul is released, he and Vince go in search of Dennis. Paul is unsure he can kill his friend. He attempts to understand the reason for Dennis's betrayal. Caught in the cross-fire of rebel and government forces, Paul and Vince return to Managua. There, Marta tells Paul the truth behind Dennis' actions. Marta is married and has a son with Barcel, and has fallen in love with Dennis. When a jealous Barcel refused to let them leave the country together, Dennis disappeared. Meanwhile, Dennis succeeds in the mission of obtaining the list of corrupted officials under the pay of the Cartel, but is now exposed to its revenge. Paul contacts Wheeler, Paul and Dennis' direct superior, and tells him he knows why Dennis disappeared. Dennis plans to give the list to Barcel in exchange for Marta and her son's freedom. Paul tells Wheeler that he is no longer willing to kill Dennis. After a violent stand-off, Wheeler tells Paul that if he can get Dennis to hand over the list, he will help them all leave the country. Dennis meets Paul. As they head back to Managua, they are ambushed by the Cartel. Dennis is wounded, but they manage to rendezvous with Wheeler. Meanwhile, Marta has kidnapped her son from Barcel, and joins Dennis and Paul. Barcel, realizing they are preparing to leave the country, gathers his froces to track them down.
