    • Synopsis
    • A New York literary editor is needed to chaperon a troubled, Southern poet on her first visit to the city. His feeble attempts to resist her flirtations fall short just as she mysteriously disappears.

He heads south to “save” his missing poet. But a noble cause is not enough to save him: on his search a couple of locals discover him lurking about the house where Mir'belle lives and is beaten and tied to a chair. He is laughed at when he tells the locals he has come to save the “poet”. He begins to question Mir’belle’s authenticity. Glenn T, Mir’belle’s husband – a much older, powerful and wealthy man - appears wanting to talk to Graham. It seems he is Mir'belle's legal guardian and wants all of this fuss to end. Graham doesn't trust him, but Glenn T is too much for Graham and so Graham finds himself driven to the edge of town and warned to leave and never come back.

Once again, Graham finds himself in harm's way. But Mir'belle arrives and they take to the highway - finally free. But, Graham's faith in her has been corrupted. He knows she's not the poet and, at a roadside motel, he berates her mercilessly for taking him for such a fool. She pleads with him to believe in her again, to love her again. He will, he says, if she will write him a poem. She won't or can't. They have come to the end. They make love, finally, and as Graham lays sleeping, there is a knock on the door. Glenn T has come for Mir'belle. She goes outside with him. They fight and Glenn T ends up with a gun at Mir'belles throat. She dares him to pull the trigger. He does.

Graham hides in the motel room, afraid, and as Mir'belle lays dying, he finds the poem she wrote for him.
