    • Synopsis
    • Our mother, with her vertigo, cannot ride in a car to save her life…
Living in a village about an hours drive from Haenam, which itself is located at the end of the peninsula, my mother has not ridden in a car ever since giving birth to me. Never mind getting into a car, she breaks out into a sweat and gets vertigo just watching a car pass by. My mother developed vertigo after giving birth to me at the age of 40. That’s why when my older brother was discharged from the army, she walked two hours to the village bus terminal to greet him. For my older sister’s wedding, mom overdid herself and got into a cab but she didn’t even make it out of the village before having to give up. She ended up returning home all alone. Since 28 years ago, the car ceased to be a useful thing for our mother. But mom would always say at that, “I guess I used up too much energy when I had you at such a late age…” And she’d laugh.
