Since it first appeared in the 19th century, the bicycle has accompanied the emancipation of women. In Europe, as elsewhere in the world, the bicycle has been a driving force in the fight for equal rights, and it remains a metaphor for women's conquest of public space and citizenship.
The bicycle paved the way for a revolution in clothing, it brought the physical pleasure of movement and sporting achievement, and it awakened women's interest in public life. It has awakened a desire to discover the world, to embark on adventures of all kinds. And it has encouraged commitment, as its role in the Resistance teaches us.
Cycling was part of the race for independence, alongside the ongoing struggles for access to work, universities, travel and the right to education.
Thanks to their audacity, a few pioneers set an example for other women, pedalling to the end of their adventure and their courage.
