    • Synopsis
    • The Yuyera (80) is an old country witchdoctor who knows about herbs and evil spells. She is a short and small woman clothed in rags and a dark cloak hides her face, which is always in half-light. She is perceived as a mystic woman and she has a sad and calm look under her native features. Although she sometimes looks erratic, her wisdom is immense as she knows many popular myths and legends perfectly well. Her sayings and proverbs brought from her deep soul make her appear as a strange witness of ancient times who is always contributing interesting knowledge through her peculiar view.
      The Impenetrable Chaqueño is a land of large communities of indigenous populations, dense woods and stifling hot. In this place, there is a humble hut made of sticks, straw and mud which is the home of “the Yuyera”, whose real name is known by only very few people.
      Mysterious and mystic, the Yuyera is always accompanied by her faithful dogs Gregorio and Moncho on her cart pulled by her old horse, Angelito. Old and alone, the Yuyera seldom goes to the villages because she is usually the target of jokes and insults. Many people call her “old mad” and others “old witch”. This is the reason why she is a hermit and in her place she only receives people who look for her help to cure them. She cures the evil eye, shingles and “goat leg”, among other illnesses, and she accepts food in return.
      One night, while the Yuyera is sleeping in her hut, a group of dark human shadows (persons sent by the Rosas brothers) come to the hut and set it on fire with torches. After the fire goes out, there only remain the ashes. The Yuyera’s blackened bare feet search all over the place slowly. The Yuyera, covered with a still smoking cloth, digs up a charred tin box. She opens it and takes a burnt book out from it. Then, she gets her cart ready, whistle to her dogs and tells them it is time to leave. They start to a dark path through the mist of the woods, just before dawn.
      In this way curses, supernatural phenomena linked to strange and spooky tales, myths and legends from different eras that Yuyera knows perfectly, such as salamanca, pombero, lobizón, peeled from the glen, bad light, La Llorona, among others.
      The actions of the Yuyera and their comments start each story, it is like a strange presenter of each myth. Sometimes he intercedes to solve them or leave relief and liberation, sometimes he simply manifests the unique and macabre cure.
