    • Kounachir, which stands 14 km north of the coast of Japan, is one of the two main islands of the Kurile archipelago, annexed in 1945 by the USSR. A year later, after a short period of cohabitation, the 17,000 Japanese living in this territory were massively deported. The peace agreement has still not been signed between the two countries... since the Second World War.
