    • Synopsis
    • This is a series about people displaced, lost, wandering, and dejected. Some thrown out of countries, some from their homes, each with their own perseverance story. These are stories of the UNWANTED.

Human trafficking has become an urgent problem in West Bengal, India. Some call it the new epicenter of human trafficking. In the past decade, over 500,000 women have been trafficked into West Bengal from Bangladesh alone. Many are young girls who are Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. Shuttled into crowded refugee camps like Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh, these young women are tricked to cross borders, and forced into slavery and/or prostitution.

ARIFA is from this world, and her experience of being trafficked is a backdrop onto which another story unfolds. The other story is of an urban Kolkata couple AARYA and SHEFALI. Revengeful ex-lovers, who are now intent on destroying each other. The new space in which both these stories play out is the world of an upscale prostitution racket in Kolkata, run by the threateningly-charismatic boss man LUMBU.

Shelters, brave citizens, and foundations in Kolkata that fight the system every day have been an inspiration. There are characters within this series, like PARO, LUKE, and SHEFALI who are inspired by real people and institutions; and are positioned as beacons of hope in an otherwise dismal and unsettling world.

Hope and humanity prevail, no matter how dire this world may seem. Showing daily struggles and affirmations of people in strife, perhaps gives insight into human resilience and the art of survival. The characters in this series live out their daily lives, some accepting and some rejecting their fate.
