Joan of Arc, a young virgin with an incredible charisma, is kneeling by the bedside of Duke of Lorraine. As the Duke recovers from his illness, news of Joan’s “healing powers” spreads across the country, so that Talbot, the main English war lord, sends his daughter Stella to Lorraine in her footsteps to spy on her. This information also arrives to the castle of Chinon – home of the French seductress Catherine and her power-hungry husband Georges de la Trémoille. Georges has his fingers in many pies, meeting Raymond, a sinister priest, who suggests Joan should be wary of showing off her “gift from God” as the Church does not like competition. The identity of a talented alchemist – Jacques Coeur – is discovered by Raymond, who sells this information to Georges.

Meanwhile, Julien - another teenager farm-boy - witnesses the death of his father before being saved by Bertrand de Poulengy, a Saintly hero on a secret mission. Becoming Bertrand’s squire and very close to him, Julien joins him on his noble quest, constantly asking questions about the evolution of western society. We catch up with them, five years later, as they roam the French countryside, stopping at inns as they search for members of the nefarious Cult of the Beast. The goal of the Cult is to enslave humanity, by promising “extraordinary things” to those who are tempted into following them. Bertrand remains vigilant for signs of the Cult, including the tell-tale mark of the Beast, a symbol branded on the wrists of its members. They clash with Andoche, a powerful Burgundian warrior, for the first but not last time!

Sometime later, Bertrand learns from mercenaries in an inn that Georges placed a bounty on Jacques, wanted alive. During that time, Catherine exchanges important information with her lover, Gilles de Rais. Gilles needs reinforcements from Georges for the city of Laval, besieged by the English, and obtains it.

Georges faces a mysterious chess player who gives him information about the mighty horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Joan meets a white draught horse and rescues him from certain death, before making him her war horse. She is captured by Stella, who is unaware that she has captured Joan, before escaping in a brilliant attack.

On their side, Julien and Bertrand continue their quest, leading them to a swamp where they find the Cult’s symbol. But then, their horses are slaughtered by something evil lurking in the shadows, ready to strike again.

Joan takes refuge in a castle where she is cured. While meeting the mistress of the castle, hordes of evil rats break the windows and attack the women of the castle. Another of Joan's powers is revealed: while she can heal good people, the evil creatures catch fire at her touch: the rats are reduced to ashes.

Finally, the city of Laval is attacked by the English, but the French resist the assaults well. Then, Loch, an English alchemist, offers supernatural help to Talbot: Laval is taken during the night with incredible violence by monstrous creatures, climbing the walls, killing soldiers and citizens indiscriminately, until the English flag is flying over the blood-stained city...
