    • Synopsis
    • Metropolitan Irineos Galanakis is considered one of the
most important personalities of Crete. In the course
of his long life, he stood out as a bishop, an educator,
a pioneer and, most of all, a charismatic spiritual leader
      who supported groundbreaking social initiatives
      and enjoyed great popoularity.
His was a century full of faith, struggle and social commitment. Believing deeply in the ideals of peace, democracy and freedom, he resisted political extremes like the Nazis and the Junta. He initiated the foundation of technical schools and cultural centers. A man of vision, he personified a much-needed force of change, creating equal opportunities for education and work both for men and women of all ages and taking great care of the old, the helpless and the poor. He was also one of the initiators of the first shipping company with a grassroots base in Greece.
In recognition of his work, he was appointed Metropolitan of Germany in 1971. During his term, the Orthodox Church was officially recognized in Germany and several Orthodox churches were built.
But his people wanted him back in Crete. When the
higher Church authority refused to restore him, the
people from Kissamos even went as far as kidnapping
him to make their voice heard.
In his 102 years upon this earth, Irineos Galanakis became a symbol of peaceful revolution, surpassing the
      narrow boundaries of his island.
