- Synopsis
- The year is 1914 and WWI turns Europe into a big battlefield - not only at the frontlines but also in every affected home.
  Danish Esben lives on the wrong side of the border and is forced to fight under the German flag.
  Barely surviving 3 years at the frontline, he almost can’t believe it when he is sent home to his beloved wife and kid.
  But everything has changed in his absence...
  Esbens son, Karl, doesn’t remember or want to talk with his father. And his beautiful wife, Kirstine, hasn’t run their Mill entirely on her own.
  The local German police officer, Gerhard, seems to have come very close to the family.
  When Gerhard arranges Esben to be sent back to the war again, Esben knows that it will surely cost him his life, his marriage or both.
  He decides to flee and only survives because of the skills he learned in the army. He stages his own death, and seek hiding in the attic of his home so he can be close to his wife. Everything seems to go well until Gerhard suddenly begins to visit again. Not to hunt Esben, but because he is in love with Kirstine.
  Gerhard is an ambitious and attractive man, who only wants the best for Kirstine and her son.
  Kirstines inner doubt grows as fast as Esbens frustration, looking down from the attic, at what should have been his life.
  Gerhards right hand Hansen, is Danish, but more German-minded than most Germans. He is the only one convinced that Esben is still alive. And when Kirstine becomes pregnant - with Esbens child - nothing can keep the secret safe… except if Kirstine makes love to Gerhard.
  
  But how far should he go in the name of love and war, to save his family and life?
  When Esben realizes that it would have been better if he had ended his life on the battlefield, he turns himself in.
  But just when everything seems lost, an unexpected helping hand appears.
