  As long as humans have interacted with lava it has had a deep impact on our lives, and not only in the ways you’re used to hearing about. In Hunting Lava, we follow the film’s director Karim, a nerdy drone pilot inspired by nature, on his journey to places that will leave him forever changed. Growing up in Maui, volcanoes have been a part of Karim’s life as long as he can remember. As drone pilot and underwater photographer Karim has spent the past decade filming and photographing volcanoes all over the world, and it has led him to see lava not just as the ultimate destroyer, but as a creator, a protector, a mythical being, and above all, a cosmic teacher. Hunting Lava follows Karim on his journey to craft a picture of lava that has never been seen before. Alongside passionate volcanologists, archaeologists, planetary geologists, indigenous elders, we hunt the lava of present and past as they scale the sides of volcanoes, row across lakes and hike into remote caves, all to bring us into their unique worlds. In each location Karim is searching for the seminal image that will immortalise that place and exhibit the phenomena of lava in a new light. From Japan to Iceland, underwater explorers to interplanetary volcanologists, Karim will fly, free dive, and traverse the solar system to understand, appreciate and share his love of lava.
