    • Synopsis
    • SNIT MANDOLIN(15)runs away from the juvenile institution he was forcibly taken to four years before and returns to the hill country he grew up in to make a fresh start.
At first things go well for Snit. He meets ROBIN (15) and a love story begins. But back-breaking labor in the fields, and old wounds re-opened, conspire against him. When Snit learns why his family was shunned by the community and why he was taken away from his home, he abandons his hopes of making an honest go of it and falls in with JOHNNY SWIFT(14).
Johnny's moon-shining offers both boys a way to make money and leave the hills behind. They live a wild free life at night, stealing away to Johnny’s still where they work, become fast friends and dream and laugh together. Until the adventure is interrupted by ROY KANE(40), the district cop. Enigmatic, unpredictable, and with his own sense of justice, Kane is hot on the trail of the boys' bootlegger.
Snit and Kane haven't met since Kane dragged Snit away from his home four years ago. Even as he plays cat-and-mouse with the boys, Kane begins to wonder about the institution he warehoused Snit in, and what it might have done to Snit.
Taking their last load to the bootlegger, Snit is drawn to a community dance and sees the effects of their moonshine. Robin tells Snit Johnny's liquor is poisonous and Snit discovers the moonshine is Johnny's way of getting revenge on his father and the community at large - a revenge Johnny expects Snit to share.
Provoked by the bootlegger, Snit's feelings of being excluded from a community he rightly calls his own erupt into violence. Snit savagely beats the bootlegger, a wild-eyed Johnny urging him on. But Snit puts down his fists when he realizes the futility of violence and revenge. Their partnership over, the boys are at a crossroads.
Rejected, alone and with no place to stay, Johnny's own raw anger leads him to a place he can never come back from.
Snit grasps a thin lifeline offered him by Kane and defiantly stands up for his rights. Ultimately we see Snit for who he really is: a hero.
