    • Synopsis
    • In the sci-fi documentary Hungry, a mysterious Being in a near future sets off on an expedition to investigate a world devoid of human life and find out what led to the extinction of humanity. The Being determines to unravel the tangled course of cause and effects leading to the decline and elimination of almost all lifeforms by using voice recordings they retrieved from the past – interviews made by filmmaker Susanne Brandstätter with prominent international experts and scientists before the elimination events.

While listening to the voice recordings, the Being begins to connect the dots between the chain of events that seemingly wiped out humanity, whilst exploring and filming the surroundings. Choosing images that sometime echo what is being said, the Being at other times combines visuals that appear dissonant, creating new associations and dimensions. With each interview the Being comes closer to solving what led to the deterioration of the environment, to drastic changes in the biosphere and in crops, to the decline of democracies and to the extinction of humankind.

To connect the dots and reveal what wiped out humanity, the Being combines these voice recordings with the images that they film. Sometimes they choose images that echo what is being said and at other times they link visuals that appear dissonant, creating new associations and dimensions. With each interview, new facts disclose surprising connections, delivering clues that indicate what led to the deterioration of the environment, to drastic changes in the biosphere and in crops, to the decline of democracies and to the extinction of humankind. Ultimately, the bigger picture emerges and the evidence becomes conclusive. In a worldwide experiment gone wrong, an economic system based on exploitation derailed the entire world: the increase and expansion of global mega-mergers created a dynamic that destabilized not only the food system, but also the whole planet. An unlimited hunger for profit contributed to a fatal feedback loop, which could no longer be stopped... Until finally, there was no more possibility to heal either humanity or the world.

      Or not?

Hungry conveys a passion that incites to positive action: for although the visuals show a possible and grim future, the voice recordings of the scientists and experts deliver a convincing argument: this vicious cycle can be broken before it’s too late. Hungry is an urgent call for the systemic change that can prevent this desolate tomorrow from becoming our today.
