- In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, Emmanuel, a young Haitian teacher, migrates his family to the Dominican Republic in search of a better life. Unable to find work in the schools, he takes up housekeeping duties at Hotel Paraíso, a popular beachside resort catering mostly to American tourists. When his earnings aren’t enough to financially support his family, he realizes that his only viable outlet is to enter the underground criminal world. He is hired by a local drug dealer, notorious for exploiting undocumented Haitians, who immediately takes advantage of his desperation and has him distribute drugs to the wealthy tourists staying at the hotel. Although the business proves to be lucrative at first, his world begins to spiral out of control when he is falsely accused of murdering an important hotel guest, forcing him to flee the country and abandon his loved ones. Once an optimistic family man, Emmanuel learns that in order to survive he must adapt to his new surroundings in the Dominican Republic - even if they may be morally questionable.
