    • Synopsis
    • A young resistance fighter, the Man with the red hat is brought to the courtmartial. It seems that his destiny is unequivocally decided. But it’s not alucky day for the chief justice of the court martial in the bowl game he isplaying while waiting for the prisoners. One bowling pin stays up and theprisoner is left alive… Everything changes in a moment.

The short feature “Hope” is inspired by a short story “Four Monologues about Saint George” by an Estonian writer Jaan Kross. It tells a story of Michel Sittow (1469-1525), a courtroom artist of the future Charles V, who returns to his hometown Tallinn AD 1506. The painter is an alter ego of the writer himself whoreturned to Tallinn at the beginning of the 1950s, after returning from deportation by Stalin’s regime. The leading character of the film, Michel Sittow, gets from the pre-Reformation era (1506) into the future (1946) wherehe is shot by the court-martial. This does not happen in the “happy end” version. In the “Russian” version of the film all is just vice versa – the judges are shot and the main character escapes. This surrealistic and absurd short film shows that the modern era can be even darker than the Middle Ages.

The film, shot in 3D, has three different endings: the so-called “European”, “American” and “Russian” one. Which one will the spectator see this time? It is unpredictable, let’s just hope that the more righteous one.
