    • Synopsis
    • Just like ordinary people, whole nations often wonder why their neighbors are living better than they. Where did Estonians get bicycles and sewing machines? Could the answer have some connection with Latvian cargo ship RASMA, that sank near Estonian Mohni Island 74 years ago?

In the summer of 1941 the people from Estonian villages Viinistu, Pärispea and Turbuneeme were greatly amazed seeing the silhouette of the giant Latvian steamer Rasma in the shallows of Mohni Island. These waters had never seen such a big fish before! The gigantic steamer that was regularly crossing the Atlantic shipping spar trees to Argentina, could not keep up with the Soviet convoy heading to Leningrad (St. Petersburg) as it had landed on a Finnish sea-mine. In order to save as much as possible, its captain had commanded the ship to run aground near Mohni Island, full and down with Husqvarna bicycles, Singer sewing machines, rye, flour and ammunition.
