In the winter of 2003, the poet Juan Desiderio met one Armand Binoche at the library where Desiderio still works to this day. At the time, Binoche was homeless and sleeping rough. But he told Desiderio that he was Juliette Binoche’s cousin and, since he was a compulsive reader, it didn’t take long for him and Juan to become friends. Desiderio took him home to live with him. Once there, Binoche told him about his past as an actor and model in Paris, and how he had fallen on hard times in Buenos Aires, after the 2001 crisis. Binoche never left the house while he lived at Juan’s, and spent his days writing a book he never wanted to talk about. At night, when Juan came home from work, Armand would recount to him events from his strange and fabulous life on the five continents. Although he was homeless and poor, every week he received an envelope with money that he gave to Juan to buy duck and oranges. He wanted to relaunch himself as a model, and needed recent photos to send to France, so Desiderio organized a session with a photographer friend. Armand not only paid for the photos, but also bought the film. When Desiderio told him that he needed to sell the house where they both lived, Binoche offered to buy it, which was a surprise considering he had been homeless until quite recently. Juan accepted the offer, but when the day came to sign the deeds, Binoche disappeared. He left only his clothes behind, taking with him the book he was writing and the photos and film. Because of that, there are no photos of Armand. A few days later, Juan received an email from a French woman who introduced herself as Armand Binoche’s manager and told him Armand had died a few days earlier in Buenos Aires from a heart attack in the street. Luckily, Desiderio had taped his conversations with Armand about his life of fame, then his other life helping poor villages in Africa, his love affairs with an Arab sheikh, and so many other things…
The years passed. Recently, Juan heard a story about a homeless French man, who had had a love affair with a priest in a provincial town, had stolen everything of value in the church, and then disappeared. Armand Binoche is alive. Armand Binoche is back. This documentary is the story of that friendship through the eyes of Juan Desiderio and the search we undertake with him, following the trail of his old friend. As we travel with Juan, we slowly discover not just Armand but this poet who is half rocker, half mystic, capable of offering his home to a stranger and then, 20 years later, embarking on a journey to find him again. The main goal in this documentary is to find out how the story continues. Many years ago, in his book Ángeles Parricidas, Juan Desiderio wrote:
…blessed be this journey it becomes static in the soul and rest in the body
Recently, in his new book, he adds:
it isn’t madness to believe in the existence of a magnet at the end of the paths
