- The year is 2057, and after decades of armed conflict, the world has split
  into two power blocs: The “Federation”, and the “Eastern Alliance”.
  To deter future attacks, the Federation has built a defense satellite called
  Guardian. It is equipped with a huge bomb,
  whose explosive power can destroy half the globe.
  The “Guardian” is to be controlled by an artificial intelligence called “ELI”,
  which is to operate unaffected by emotions.
  Its job is to make decisions based only on logic and orders.
  DIANE COLTON, who developed and programmed E.L.I.’s artificial intelligence,
  is an active opponent of the war until her son’s death in an Eastern Alliance
  bombing raid and wants to prevent E.L.I. from falling into the hands of
  the military at all costs. But a year after her son’s death, she finds herself on
  the Guardian satellite with the technician and the completed E.L.I. prototype.
  When a solar storm disables the Alliance’s defense systems, ELI launches a
  secret command protocol; called the Omega Protocol, it dictates ELI detonate
  the bomb as soon as the Alliance’s defense system is down.
  Colton and Bell are now the last resort between
  E.L.I.’s secret order and the extermination of billions of innocents.
  After all attempts to dissuade E.L.I. from its mission are unsuccessful,
  Colton decides to perform a desperate act: she enters the missile silo and
  stands under the missile engines. If E.L.I. wants to launch the missile, he will
  have to kill Colton. Although E.L.I. is supposed to operate without human
  emotions, he has an emo- tional bond with Colton, as his creator.
  This ultimately leads to E.L.I. aborting the rocket launch,
  saving billions of lives. But it turns out we’re not on board a satellite. It was
  all just a simulation - a trial run to test the artificial intelligence that will later
  command the satellite. E.L.I. didn’t pass the test; it broke away from its programming,
  showed something like emotion.... He is unfit.
  Colton is ordered to destroy E.L.I.’s central computer chip, where his consciousness
  resides. But instead of following the order, Colton gives in to her
  conscience and smuggles E.L.I. out of the testing lab.
  After the credits, a technician brings a new artificial intelligence to be tested.
  A chip called ARGOS.
