The film tells the story of three children from the borderland town of Grodno – Leoś, Tadek and Ewelina. Leoś is passionate about Polish history, literature, and its romantic traditions. He is friends with Tadek, with whom he competes for the favours of Ewelina, their classmate. On 1 September 1939, the school is bombed by German planes. WWII forces the protagonists, as well as thousands of Polish children, to quickly leave their childhood behind and grow up. On 17 September, the Soviets enter Poland and the people of Grodno are defending the city. The few military units are supported by civilians, especially schoolchildren. During the Soviet attack, Leoś and Tadek defend the Polish barricades, the last piece of Poland in the borderlands. Their friendship is put to a test when they find out that Leoś’s brother, Jakub, is leading a group supporting the Soviet troops attacking Grodno.
