    • Synopsis
    • The current media obsession with dieting and fitness has reached an all time high with the launch of “Slim TV”, but unfortunately for Dinah Davidson, achieving the body beautiful has always been an uphill struggle. Determined to shed a few pounds and hoping to discover her real self, she plucks up the courage to join her local slimming club. But unfortunately for Dinah they happen to be the worst diet class in the city. Maybe even the country.
Peopled with a colorful assortment of dieters, including wanna-be starlet April, overweight drag queen Ron (aka Big Brenda), the chain smoking hairdresser Pat and the chunky-but-hunky Tony, this disparate group of dieters is destined to fail at every turn, particularly with the well meaning but hopeless Anne at the helm.
Even worse for shy Dinah, high flying television producer Candida Jones has just announced Slim TV’s inaugural Slimming Pageant. But the generous prize money on offer and the chance to be crowed Australasia’s best diet group proves irresistible to our motley crew.
Unfortunately Dinah and co are not the only diet class in town, and the hot-ticket favorites are the taut and toned well-heeled Slenderhips class, led by Celeste McGowan, one time Miss South Africa, fitness guru and all round queen bitch.
It’s dog-eat-dog as the rival teams pull out all stops to win this celebration of slim, and dodgy diet tips combine with high energy exercise routines, and Dinah and her class look like they might be heading for success.
Then their class is joined by 18 stone Tammy, and it looks like their hope for victory have slipped away. But they’re not going down without a fight. It’s not about the money, and it’s not about losing weight. Now it’s about self esteem. It’s about confidence. It’s about being beautiful, no matter how much you weigh.
Gluttons for Punishment is a feel good down-under comedy in the tradition of Muriel’s Wedding and Strictly Ballroom.
