- Synopsis
- The film follows a group of 'YouTubers' who are also young teenage girls, growing up in real-time before our eyes. They live in a world with complete creative control over their media - no producers, no editors, no agents - all while garnering the attention of thousands of daily anonymous viewers. Popular video titles like "I might be pregnant" "10 things to know about me" and "The routine of a millionaire" -- all shot in their homemade makeshift TV studios -- help them communicate to the world. Every day, they exhaust themselves thinking up interesting and funny ideas to keep their fans engaged. For many of them, this is more than a hobby: it's an income, it's a job. Just like eccentric novel writers, the girls crave more dramatic, passionate, or comical events to happen to them - just so they can use that material to rack up more views and attract more subscribers. However, their videos often reflect a very fragmented version of themselves. We watch these girls navigate the growing pains of adolescence, while also grappling with what it means to be entangled in our new frenzied relationship with the digital world. The process of growing up - for them - is not a private affair: it is done so in front of the camera while sharing their thoughts and feelings with invisible strangers. Fantasy and reality become entangled in a bizarre and unusual relationship with their viewership. The channel offers a space where a hiper reality is possible. Being able to exist online means they can avoid real relationships and contact with other flesh and bone people.
