    • Synopsis
    • During First World War women had their own role in the conflict. A group of high-society ladies went to France as nurses of the Portuguese Red Cross. Known as Damas Enfermeiras (literal translation for Gentlewomen Nurses), they left Portugal with an unprecedented mission: to build a hospital in Ambleteuse, northern France, in order to take care of the wounded and sick among the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps. Despite all obstacles, the hospital was open on time to receive the badly- injured soldiers from the Battle of La Lys.
The hospital was inaugurated on the 9th of April 1918, the day that the Battle of La Lys started. Along war History we are used to see women on the background writing letters and saying goodbye to their husbands. This time, Herstory will come up to the frontline and straight to the battlefield.
