It is 1890 in Jalisco, Mexico. Magdalena and Maclovia belong to the Catholic aristocracy of the Porfiriato, a world full of appearances and social responsibilities influenced by religion and good customs. They have long before developed a romance that challenges the values of their restrictive society, endangering their lives.
One afternoon, after escaping the stare of a saintly painting in Maclovia's room, they flee toward nature. Running from the structures, they make love in a cactus field. However, the sound of footsteps interrupts them, raising paranoid suspicions of being caught. This event impacts both of them in diametrically different ways.
For Magdalena, loving Maclovia brings up deep-rooted feelings of shame. She wants to wash it away at all costs. On the other hand, for Maclovia, it turns into the courage to destroy all social impositions, rebelling against the symbols which formed her by burning the eyes of the virgin hanging above her bed. Still, Magdalena succumbs to what is expected of her and confesses their sin. The pain of this betrayal consumes Maclovia like fire in the depths of her being. Ultimately, Maclovia will have no choice but to forgive and let go of the woman she loves.
