- Synopsis
- The Formentor hotel was born 90 years ago in the head of a dreamer, Adan Diehl, when contemplating a painting by his friend Anglada Camarasa. It was built with the purpose of hosting poets and artists in a beautiful and rugged corner of Mallorca, the Formentor peninsula, when there were no roads, electricity or telephones yet. Surrounded by pine trees, with the Mediterranean at its feet, it has resisted crises, abandonment and the onslaught of mass tourism. Its successive owners, the Buadas family and currently the Barceló family, have inherited and maintained the cultural vocation of Adan Diehl that inspired its foundation. Its luminous terraces received an international meeting of writers in 1960, thus giving birth to one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world, the Formentor Prize. A place of inspiration and rest, home to historic peaks, a refuge for movie stars and tycoons, it has been a meeting point for the most important figures of the 20th century: Audrey Hepburn, Charles Chaplin, the Dalai Lama, Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly, Rainier of Monaco... but above all writers such as Camilo José Cela, Carlos Barral or Mario Vargas Llosa, who wrote one of his most remembered novels while he was staying at the hotel, while in its delicious gardens they have given great Lang-Lang concerts , Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Ainhoa Arteta, Anna Netrebko, María Joao Pires or Gustavo Dudamel. A life full of adventures, witnessed by employees and customers. Together they have written the legend of this mythical hotel.
