Filmed over four years, filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi, intimately follows two extraordinary Afghan women, Nilofar, a parliamentarian and Shakila, a television journalist. As American forces and aid leave Afghanistan, Nilofar and Shakila are forced to choose between their children and their country.

    • Synopsis
    • Since 2001, with pressure by the international community and billions of dollars in aid, the Afghan government was forced to ensure Afghan women became active members of society. They soon made up 28% of Parliament. A small group of women began working in the media. But with the pullout of the international community both militarily and financially, what will happen to those women who prospered in Afghan society? Through her insider perspective as an Afghan American woman, Sedika tells the story of two women struggling to keep their livelihoods in a landscape of insecurity and violence, where conservative values threaten the lives of women every day.

      Parliamentary Member Nilofar Ibrahimi struggles to help the women of her rural province and take care of her family. We follow her fight against religious fundamentalists in Parliament to ratify a law criminalizing violence against women. We follow her trying to reach constituents while her province loses control to the Taliban. As an outspoken politician, her children are now targets. She is forced to move them with their father to live in Australia but Nilofar stays in Afghanistan, refusing to leave her people behind. As the country is paralyzed by Taliban attacks, she must decide if she can continue to be an effective leader or if she should devote herself to her family and join them in Australia.

      Shakila Ebrahaimkhel works for TOLO news. She is one of the best on-the-ground field reporters around who made a name for herself tackling stories critical of both the Afghan government and Taliban forces. A single mother of three teenagers, she remains dedicated to her profession. But after a Taliban suicide bomber kills 7 TOLO employees, the attack is a final wake up call. Shakila flees Afghanistan with her children and they begin the journey from Istanbul through Europe via smuggling routes, seeking asylum . Will they find a country that accepts them or will they be deported back to Afghanistan where their lives hang in the balance.
