At the age of 25, Rusber is at a new crossroads in his life. From orphan and street child, he has become an indispensable member of a small primate sanctuary in Bolivia, where Nena, a local conservationist, adopted him when he was eight. This is where he grew up, among monkeys, happily calling them his brothers and sisters.
But in front of the shelter, what was once a two-lane road is about to become one of Bolivia’s largest highway. So, to escape the urban bustle that threatens the animals’ tranquillity, Nena has decided to move to the other side of the country, where a new and promising land awaits them.
While helping to relocate the only family he’s ever really known, Rusber tries to finish his last year of veterinary studies, so he can finally graduate and go traveling, like the shelter’s volunteers and his girlfriend in France. But in town, old acquaintances confront him with Bolivia’s economic realities and visions of the veterinary profession in total opposition to his convictions. Above all, the forest fires scorching the country and Nena’s weariness as she faces their consequences remind him of the urgency and necessity of his preparation to step in as the shelter’s new leader.
So, between the shelter’s relocation and the end of his studies, his loyalty to Nena and his wanderlust, it’s with everything that paves his path to adulthood that Rusber will have to find the measure of his commitment to the monkeys and the rainforest.
