    • “DOT” tells the story of indomitable American nun Dorothy Stang who has devoted forty years of her life in defense of the Amazon forest and its people, and young Father Anselmo, sent by the Vatican to investigate her. As Anselmo travels to the remotest corners of the jungle, on a journey he could never in his wildest dreams imagine, he slowly uncovers the truth about Dot. In the process he too learns deep truths about himself and his mission, and by the time he returns to the Vatican his life has been changed forever.
The story introduces us to the beauty and savagery of the jungle, as we follow the characters along the dusty rutted roads, into the lush and lovely forest, through noisy, down at heel settlements where raw sewage oozes down the roads and men crowd into roadside bars to swap stories of rich pickings in valuable land and timber. It’s a land without law, where everything is possible, where fortunes can be made and lost in a heartbeat, and where the rule of law is enforced by the barrel of a gun.
Tough, funny, smart, obstinate, some call Dot the Angel of the Amazon, others see her as an interfering foreigner and a damned nuisance. She is accused of instigating land invasions, gun running and being at the beck and call of Foreign Powers. Her name appears on the death list with a price of R$50,000 on her head. Fearlessly she confronts machismo, greed and violence, seemingly oblivious to the dangers. “They’ll never have the courage to kill an old woman like me.”
Back in the Vatican Fr. Anselmo reflects on the time he spent living with her. A time when he felt more excitement, more fear, more adventure than in all his years to date. Coffee served in fine china cups fills him with nostalgia for the lethally strong sweet cafezinho of Brazil. Solemn Mass in St Peters draws him back to joyful celebrations in the Amazon. As Dorothy is walking towards her death, Anselmo delivers a ringing defense of her mission to his colleagues at the Vatican.
Seventy three year old Dot is brutally murdered by hired guns as she walks through the forest to celebrate the launch of a program for which she and the settlers have been struggling for years. As Anselmo reflects on Dot’s challenge to him “What would you have me do?” he knows that his life henceforth will be radically changed.
