Synopsis
Englisch 100 years ago, Thomas Mann published his monumental novel "The Magic Mountain". He spent a decade working on it—a period during which both the world and the author underwent profound change. André Schäfer's film focuses on the years during which the novel was written and uses archive images to delve into the world of The Magic Mountain. The story begins with a personal event: Katja Mann, Thomas Mann’s wife, is admitted to a sanatorium in Davos due to an undiagnosed lung illness. During his visits, Mann discovers a microcosm brimming with intriguing characters and tensions. This experience inspires a novel that evolves into a satirical portrait of a Europe in decline and the waning of the late bourgeois era. Literary and medical historians, alongside the novel’s translator, provide insight into Mann’s masterpiece, illustrating its enduring relevance and modern resonance.
