    • Synopsis
    • “My dear Bastiano, today, once more, I want to thank you for everything. For all the beautiful moments we have spent together, and for the love you offered me. I will certainly remember it all, and I will do so often and
happily; and, although we might never see one another
again, I will keep your loving memory close to me until the day I die. Today, I can say no more (...) Let me kiss you with all my passion once more, your Edith.”
Hamburg (Germany), 1945. Sebastiano, an Italian
prisoner, wanders the city in ruins, making his way
between the grated barracks where he sleeps and the
bakery where he is forced to work. In his spare time, he
hunts swallows in a park and bakes them in secret in the bakery’s oven. A young woman watches him. Starting with stolen glances, a love relationship comes to be, and they start meeting in secret at her house. This silent love, made of small everyday life gestures, helps them find beauty and tenderness in a city in dissolution. But Sebastiano has to leave, and the young woman writes him a love letter in German to bid goodbye. San Sebastian (Spain), 2024. Hamid, a young baker, spends the early hours of the day working at a large industrial bakery. I observe him, as he resembles my grandfather Sebastiano. I am researching the love story of my grandfather with a German woman called Edith, while he was a prisoner in nazi labor camps in Hamburg. With the only lead of a love letter written by Edith, I start to work with Hamid on a fiction film that will explore this unknown story. Hamid gradually delves deeper and deeper into the character and I have to face his questions, difficult family questions. And little by little, reality and fiction, present and past, merge and seem to become one.
