    • Synopsis
    • A vast garbage dump of Nicaragua’s capital, immersed in a dense fog, is the home to a playful and imaginative girl, Maria, an eight-year-old girl. She lives with her mother Lilibeth, a herd of dogs and a litter of newborn purebred puppies about to be sold. Each night, Lilibeth goes out to collect garbage, fighting fiercely for the best pieces to sell at the local recycling factory. When Maria accidentally poisons the puppies while playing and feeding them, Lilibeth - enraged by the loss - takes her to work and live in the factory as punishment. Lonely and frustrated in this new setting, Maria meets Tadeo, a sick and faithful boy, who will become her best friend and accomplice. Days go by and Maria begins to fear that something serious has happened to her mother. Or else, why would she not return for her?
In the meantime, we begin to discover what’s happening outside the confines of the garbage dump. Through the security guards’ radios, small televisions with the news and trash truck drivers that get to the factory, the social and political tensions that are taking place in the main cities of Nicaragua come to the forefront. Constant riots and demonstrations are causing big numbers of casualties.
Aware of the rising tensions, Maria’s anguish increases and she starts to think that her mother must be dead. In her mind, it’s the only logical explanation; for what other reason would a mother leave her child behind?
One day a new group of people arrive at the factory. They are fleeing the riots from the protest taking place in the country, bringing with them a giant tree-shaped metal sculpture. The sculpture was used by the Government to decorate the city, and is now seen as governmental symbol to be overthrown by the protestors. Among the chaos in the factory, Maria recognizes a man carrying the purebred dog that belonged to Lilibeth and through this encounter Maria gets a clue about her mother’s whereabouts. Tadeo helps Maria flee the factory to look for Lilibeth. But her quest only leads to finding the remains of the pack of dogs - also abandoned by her mother.
At dawn, Maria hears some strange sounds, she looks out and sees a nearly naked woman swimming at the shore of a lake surrounded by small crocodiles. Maria watches her for a long time until she finds the courage to come closer. The fog clears. Maria discovers that the woman is her mother. Lilibeth starts to sink and slowly disappears with the swell. The wind is blowing in Maria’s curly hair, it appears to be growing.
After the disappearance of Lilibeth Maria’s stays solid in the ground, pressing with her feet the sand under her. The dogs surround her.
