    • Synopsis
    • CRYPTOCHROME is set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest, where a new society called THE SETTLEMENT has taken power. They send out teams of Scouts who are guided to abandoned structures, reporting survivors and contraband for community protection.
Our story follows YUICHI, a charismatic Scout yearning for his former life as a pilot. Alongside his loyal partner ASHA, who seeks leadership in The Settlement, they find comfort in their friendship. However, tension arises from Yuichi's unfulfilled life passions.
During a routine mission, Yuichi encounters JASPER, a defector Scout with a device called the TUNNEL BOX, capable of guiding people to rifts in reality. Jasper lies about killing Asha, triggering Yuichi's violent rage, which leads to Jasper's demise. Yuichi takes the Tunnel Box as Asha emerges unharmed, but upset for not protecting her partner.
Asha gets promoted within The Settlement which strains their relationship further. Discovering the Tunnel Box among Yuichi's belongings, Asha activates it out of curiosity, causing a near-death experience. Asha fears its destructive potential, and withholds the device, intensifying the tension alongside Yuichi's trauma.
Believing the Tunnel Box holds the secret to fulfill his life's purpose, Yuichi leaves Asha to find its creator, BONNIE. She reveals The Settlement used her to control defectors, and the Box allows time travel but not timeline alteration. Catinca, Jasper's vengeful partner who is seeking to resurrect him, kills Bonnie after she realizes the futility of her mission. Catinca vows to kill Asha and Yuichi as justice for what they did to the only person she cares about.
Escaping with the Tunnel Box, Yuichi returns to Asha, with a newfound appreciation for their bond. However, anxiety over Catinca's vengeance complicates their relationship. Yuichi tries to convince Asha to leave The Settlement with him, using the Tunnel Box's potential, but her faith wavers, driven by a desire to please The Settlement.
Refusing to listen, Yuichi demonstrates the untapped potential of the Tunnel Box, leading to disastrous consequences. Caught off guard by what the box conjures, Asha and Yuichi are critically injured in an ambush by Catinca. Fighting for survival, Yuichi uses the Tunnel Box to kill Catinca, destroying it in the process. Carrying Asha, he hurries toward safety.
In Yuichi's final moments, he cherishes their shared world, finding solace in the realization that they won't face death alone. Though they don't reach the plane that he manifested, Yuichi dies holding his friend, with a smile and a song in his heart.
