    • The Sisters

The long limbed, totally talented, sun-kissed, athletic 14-year-old sister’s natural playfulness has been battered but not beaten by a sexual assault that she conceals from her parents, her three best friends, and even some of her sisters. Writing songs, riding bikes, playing team volleyball and hanging with friends keeps her going. But when she discovers she’s pregnant, it’s an even bigger nightmare. If her Dad finds out, he would send her away. Her Mom would scream, throw whatever’s in reach, put on more lipstick and have a martini. Now she’ll need to figure out how to get an abortion on her own, while struggling to adjust to freshman year.

One of the older sisters is away at college to become a nurse and is twenty-one. She visits the house and brings her best girlfriend (are they just friends?) home on some weekends and holidays. She likes her super short haircut, smokes pot, and digs wearing Levi’s all the time. She explores her own sexuality and can’t believe how thrilling it is. But be quiet, it’s weird. Hopefully, it’s just a phase.

Then there’s the oldest sister of all five who at 24, can dress the sophisticated part of a wife to a much older successful man who travels in the music business. He got her into modeling at 19. Wild and thrilling? Not lately. What happened to her career? Who are her friends anyway? Does she have an eating disorder, a drinking problem? Or maybe that’s just the way they do things when you get older.

Third in line and 17 years old is Valley High’s head Cheerleader, smart, and Miss Popular. She starts flirting with and eventually gets interested in that tall, cute, black, bused-in guy. That’s not gonna go over very well and she wishes her younger sister didn’t have to have that thing happen to her! She’s been so moody lately! Let’s forget about it already!

The youngest, who is very organized, often seems like the most mature.

Ultimately, three of the sisters will plan revenge on the rapist who is the captain of the university water polo team. Nobody messes with the McAllister sisters.

      The Grownups

The over solicitous Dad to five daughters wishes his co-workers looked up to him the way (he thinks) most of his daughters do. His girls love to ask him things (do they?) because he knows so much about everything (does he?) And what are boundaries anyway? Unlike his wife, everybody values his opinion at his church. Maybe he should return to the seminary and finish becoming a priest.

Mom didn’t let having five daughters stop her from keeping a good figure and painting on the perfect eyeliner every day as she sets out to her new career as a nurse at the local hospital. She tells anyone who will listen, “Why? Because I’m worth it!” Her daughters agree. They think it’s awesome. She’s a libber who still insists on wearing her kitten-heels to church and to the grocery store.
