- Synopsis
- The valley of the river Jiu is a coal-mining region situated in Romania, on the ancient borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In a previous ”model” communist society area, the active population was forced – following the closing of the mines – to leave abroad in order to look for work. Due to their precarious conditions, parents have left their children to the care of a grand-parent, an aunt or neighbours. According statistics, 27% of the children of the area live without one or both parents.
