    • Synopsis
    • Young agent Yannis returns to the Police Station of Villa Hessel, a small town deep inside Cuba, right at the same time when a man’s half devoured corpse shows up just outside town. The first inquiries by agent Yannis are boycotted by police commissioner Santos and his subordinates, who have organized illegal businesses of their own, and won’t allow a newcomer to stick her nose where it doesn’t belong. But Yannis has come back to stay. Her brother Pedro Juan is keeping her there. The young man suffers from a condition known as photophobia, and can only go out at night. During his nightly escapades, his ability to detach himself from reality has led him to discover certain areas, completely isolated and unknown to the town. A town that before the revolution had been very prosperous due to a growing textile industry, but now only has the honor of being the place where the new system of irrigation tunnels is to be built, so as to provide water to the rest of the island. Only three days remain for the Comandante himself to arrive to town and cut the ribbon.
The appearance of several mutilated bodies belonging to the workers in the tunnels will be the spark that finally fires up the investigation that Yannis will continue with the help of Jon, a Basque ecosystem specialist. Some discoveries will lead to Siboney, an ex scientist that worked on a program called: “Food for the People”. A project run by the Cuban government in the 90s aiming to rid Cuba of the grave nutritional crisis that fell upon the island after the Soviet Union’s collapse. It was the so-called: Special Period. A species of catfish rich in protein called “Claria” was introduced to grow in captivity. But a group of scientists led by the best Cuban genetist of his generation was searching for something more. A local Cuban species that would forever rid Cuba of its dependency on food. The clarias were genetically altered, splicing their genes with other endemic Cuban species, in search for a perfect, unique specimen: the first endemic species aimed to feed a whole population.
Unfortunately, they achieved their goal. Not only was the mutated species rich in protein, but also in viciousness.
While Santos attempts to keep anything from altering this apparent peaceful town, Yannis must find what happened with the mutated clarias. What they’ve become and how many of them there are. But her greatest task will be to stop them from expanding all over Cuba across the new irrigation tunnels. Along ancient factories overgrown by the jungle, abandoned bunkers and dark tunnels Yannis will face the Cuban government’s best-kept secret.
