    • Set in 1600’s Mombasa city state; following years of rape, murder and pillaging orchestrated from their safe haven at Fort Jesus, the Portuguese become unwelcomed visitors on the East African coast. The Swahili locals led by SUDI, Sultan ALI’s son, revolt against their oppressors but unknown to them the Sultan has a secret deal with the leader of the Portuguese, CAPTAIN RODRIGUEZ, to supply him slaves.
He does this out of pragmatism to save his people from the illicit trade but when his son finds out it creates a rift between them. War becomes eminent with the overthrow of the pacifist Sultan and the replacement of him by his war mongering son, Sudi.
Sultan Ali knows his people’s bows and arrows are no match for the might of the Portuguese Cannon, musket and Caravels. He beseeches the new ruler, his son, to at least wait until he can get help from their kinsmen in Oman before he can wage war against the Portuguese but the hot blooded Sudi doesn’t heed the advice and leads his people to war. True to the Sultan’s words the Swahili are massacred and their town destroyed.
