Shigemi Ichikawa (Goro Inagaki) had his one, single novel published many years ago, and has been a freelance writer ever since. He knows his wife, novel editor Sai, is having an affair with a popular young novelist she is in charge of, but is shocked by how little he cares about it. He feels there is nobody he can turn to for advice, but is very taken by the contents of a novel, a novel by high school student Rua Kubo (Tina Tamashiro), for which she has won a literary award, when he attends the award ceremony press conference as a reporter. He is fascinated by the way the protagonist of the novel quickly relinquishes whatever he has obtained, and asks Rua to let him meet whoever this character was based on.
The first person she introduces to him is her own boyfriend, blond-haired biker Yuji, who is hostile to Ichikawa, seeing him as a middle-aged man with ulterior motives toward Rua.
She then introduces her uncle, Kawanabe, who tells Ichikawa that Rua's father has gone missing, and her mother is already dead. Kawanabe, who lives a hermit-like existence in the middle of a forest, then opens up to Ichikawa about his own problems.
