His stage name refers to a port on the Colombian Pacific called Buenaventura, the place where Yuri Bedoya was born and raised, a 46-year-old mulatto with a small, thin build, who says he is "a six-foot black man" at heart. Buenaventura was populated by Cimarrones, emancipated slaves; being born and growing up there marked Yuri. The sounds of the drum, the marimba and the cooing of the blacks on the shore of that gray sea and sky, the jungle, the Tunda and the Virgin of Carmen, the witchcraft and faith that are breathed there, gave him the tidal blow, that seal of identity with which you can recognize a musician from Buenaventura.
