    • Synopsis
    • “Broken Paperclip” is a fast-paced, mystery-filled techno-thriller, a narrative packed with shocks, reversals, and an escalating tension intensified by its claustrophobic-yet-intricate single location, the Smart Home. The film hinges upon core sci-fi hooks, employing them to create an innovative spin on the tired “lost memories” cliché, as well as the “imaginary companion” trope common in films as varied as ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Daniel Isn’t Real’. The film uses these devices to drive a suspenseful plot, yet ‘Broken Paperclip’ also weaves in compelling themes of loss and dealing with brain damage, which deepens our empathy for these characters and their plight. As it constantly plays with time, memory, and point of view ‘Broken Paperclip’ recalls genre classics such as ‘Memento’ and ‘Ex Machina’ and Blumhouse’s ‘Upgrade’, yet creates something very fresh, highly commercial, and extremely exciting.
