    • Synopsis
    • The debut of American filmmaker Constance Tsang, who has Chinese roots, is a poignant tale of alienation, longing, and the universal desire to not sleep alone. Featuring Lee Kang-sheng, a favorite of New Horizons festival fans and Tsai Ming-liang’s muse, the film delves into the life of an immigrant in New York. Lee’s character, Tony, strives to build a new life while remaining tethered to an increasingly distant past. Tsang captures the loneliness and sense of limbo that are intrinsic to the migrant experience. Tony shares his feelings of dislocation with Didi, a masseuse played by Haipeng Xu. Both are searching for a semblance of family and find comfort in each other's company. Didi finds a small female community at the massage parlor, while Tony and Didi bond over shared meals, the courage to tentatively look forward, and carefully guarded secrets. However, their budding romance takes an unexpected, violent turn, highlighting the fragility of those far from home. The uncertain world of the characters seems perpetually on the brink of cracking or falling apart. Tsang’s melodrama offers an unconventional, far-from-postcard-perfect portrait of New York City. She captures its small pockets where Mandarin is spoken and where immigrants live—physically present in their makeshift homes, but spiritually wandering faraway streets.
