    • Synopsis
    • In the hot month of August, the Romans leave their homes to go on holiday. The city is suddenly populated only by tourists and the few Romans - who for financial or personal reasons cannot leave. We look at the lives of three of these people:

Daniele, a policeman, with a strong moral code who is trying to do the right thing
Giovanni a children's entertainer: he dresses as a clown at parties but is about to lose control
Antonio, an older man, struggling to survive, he collects coins tourists throw into fountains
The lives of these three men are interwoven and all intersect on the birthday of Elisa, the little daughter of Daniele.

      Director Statement - Asiyat Gamzatova:
Everything we do is connected to experience in childhood. Visceral memories are imprinted in our early years. I like to examine the process that triggers those memories, what lies behind them, and what that means in our adult life.

In this era of chaos and confusion , it's important to hold onto our humanity. The characters of this story seem to have forgotten that, and even the innocence of a child seems to be tainted by the disillusion of adults.

There are topics in Birthday Candles that are very dear to me, such as loneliness, compassion, empathy and the power of imagination. Set in Rome, a city that is populated by the ghosts of the past and the distracted tourists of the present, this lyrical drama shows three men and a little girl faced by their struggles. The city becomes a silent witness to small everyday tragedies.
